RESIDENTS using Hampshire’s tips have been warned to keep away if they have not booked a slot.

The county council’s new booking system is set to go live tomorrow (Thursday) and will be enforced at sites from Monday.

It is hoped introducing 30-minute slots will cut lengthy queues and abuse of staff which have plagued household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) since they reopened on 11th May.

Tips will also see the longer summer schedule introduced, open from 9am to 6pm daily.

Cllr Rob Humby, transport and environment chief at Hampshire County Council, said he was confident the new system would see an end to the “lengthy and disruptive” traffic queues outside HWRCs.

“We’ve had to set up this system in response to the severe traffic queues we’ve seen at some of the HWRCs since they reopened in May with new social distancing measures in place,” he said.

“The queues at some sites were causing significant problems for nearby businesses or to the safety of others on the roads.”

Residents will be able to book a 30-minute slot up to 48 hours in advance, but will be limited to one visit per household per week.

A statement from HCC warned that HWRCs were still likely to be busy and those turning up without a confirmed booking would not be allowed on to the site.

A number of lockdown restrictions are still in place, however, including:

  • Site staff are unable to provide any assistance with unloading material or carrying material
  • Trailers are not permitted
  • User must keep at least a two metres from others at all times
  • Chargeable waste such soil, rubble, asbestos and plasterboard will not be accepted
  • Reuse sales areas remain closed

Bookings can be made online at www.hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/recyclingcentres/book-appointment or by calling 023 8017 9949
