Morebus launches new service for Burton after residents' campaign
BURTON residents have successfully campaigned for a new bus service.
Route 23 from Morebus now connects the village, which previously had limited bus services, to Christchurch town centre, Somerford Estate and Sainsbury’s. Stops also include Purewell Medical Centre and the Hunt Road shops.
Supported by BCP Council and additional government funding, the hourly timetable runs from 7am-7pm, Monday to Saturday and 9am-5pm on Sundays. It includes buses at peak times.
According to the council, around 22% of Burton households have no access to a car.
Morebus said the new route means villagers now benefit from a convenient bus service comparable to other areas.
The company was joined by representatives from BCP Council and campaign group A Bus for Burton to celebrate the launch.
Morebus managing director Andrew Wickham said: “We know there is great demand for a more frequent route linking these areas, so we’re delighted to have been awarded the tender to operate these buses.
“Not only will it make the area more accessible for all, it will also give people the opportunity to leave their cars at home and use sustainable transport instead.
“A bus has the potential to take many cars off the road – helping to ease congestion and improve air quality.”
Passengers can use the Morebus app to plan their journeys and buy tickets, while tracking their bus in real time. The app also allows them to work out how much CO2 they are saving, compared to driving a car.
Morebus has also amended the route and timetable for its 24 service so it now calls at St Catherine’s, Christchurch, Somerford Road, and Somerford Sainsbury’s.
