Police extinguish blaze lit by youths on wall of Christchurch home

POLICE had to put out a fire as they tackled a group of anti-social youths in Christchurch.

The small blaze had been lit on the wall of a residential property, and a Facebook post by local officers afterwards warned it could have quickly escalated to become a serious emergency.

A neighbourhood policing team patrol came across the youngsters on their way back to the station at the end of their shift.

One of the officers extinguished the flames with the aid of water provided by a nearby takeaway, while the other pursued and stopped one of the youths who, the post said, would be "dealt with appropriately”.

It added: “The fire had been lit below a large hedge and could have easily resulted in a large fire with serious consequences had officers not been able to intervene.”

The patrol believed the offenders involved were among a number of youths from whom they had previously seized alcohol at Steamer Point.
