PLANTING is set to improve a neglected strip of land in the centre of New Milton, branded a “horrible eyesore”.

The small area near the KFC in Ashley Road, near its junction with Station Road, had long been a problem, a recent town council amenities committee meeting heard.

It was stressed the fast food restaurant had nothing to do with it, and chairman Cllr Geoff Blunden announced contact had recently been made with the landowner.

They had agreed to give the town council permission to add flowers to brighten it up.

Cllr Blunden commented the strip actually looked worse since an area of scrub had been removed.

“We will take over looking after it and, particularly in this jubilee year, planting flowers,” he said.

“This is an initial stab at making this horrible eyesore look a bit better.”

Cllr Robert Murrow pointed out he had raised the matter with the council “some time ago”.

“The centre of New Milton should look absolutely great,” he said. “It shouldn’t have been left like that for so long.”

Several committee members praised the KFC branch, which opened late last year.

Cllr Steve Davies said: “I’ve found the team of KFC to be incredibly supportive of the town and think they have brought extra footfall and trade to the town. I’m absolutely delighted.”
