The collision involved a black Land Rover and happened shortly before 5.40pm on the A35 Barrack Road, near the Bailey Roundabout.
The local man, who was in his 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed.

“We are carrying out a full investigation, and I would urge any witnesses who have not already spoken to police to please contact us.
“I am also keen to hear from any motorists who may have captured any relevant footage on dash cam, as well as businesses or residents with CCTV footage that might assist our enquiries.”
Sgt Savage added: “Finally, I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding during the road closures, which were necessary to allow the emergency services to respond and to allow an examination of the collision scene to be conducted.”
