“EVERY moment counted" – those were the words of Calshot RNLI following the rescue of two paddle boarders who drifted into a shipping lane close to a large container vessel.

A crew aboard D-class lifeboat Willett responded to a call-out reporting the pair were in difficulty near Blackjack in Southampton Water just before 4.30pm on Wednesday.

With the container ship said to have been close by, near Bramble Bank, the volunteer crew quickly extracted the pair before returning them safely to shore.

Deputy launching authority Diane Carrier said afterwards: “This was a very fast-moving situation and with the volume of traffic in the shipping lane and the close proximity of a large container ship, every moment counted to reach the casualties.

“Had we not been able to react as quickly, the outcome could have been much different.”
