Operators of Hythe ferry, Red Funnel remain ‘committed’ to resuming service as it announces further suspension

THE operator of Hythe ferry – which has been out of action since August – says it remains “committed” to resuming the service.

As reported in the A&T, the route, which connects Hythe and Southampton, stopped operating after engineers discovered damage to a pontoon, making it unsafe.

The ferry is regularly used by commuters, shoppers, and football fans travelling to Saints games at St Mary's Stadium. It is also a draw for tourists, as the railway which takes passengers to the ferry is Britain's oldest continuously operating electric pier train.

Issuing an update on the suspension, a Hythe ferry spokesperson said: “Two weeks ago, we reached out to a number of external contractors to understand the financial investment required to bring the ferry back into service safely.

“It is important we have a number of quotes to review, but we are yet to receive all responses, so the service suspension will be extended until at least early October.”

They added: “This extension allows sufficient time to assess the quotes thoroughly and ensure the most sustainable and safe decision is made.

“We are committed to finding a solution to bringing the ferry back into service and will provide you with a further update at the beginning of October. Thank you for your continued support.”
