Old soldier Nick’s on a mission to hit scooter marathon target for Royal British Legion’s RBL 26 fundraiser
VETERAN and retired plumber Nick Lambert from New Milton has raised hundreds of pounds for the Royal British Legion with a seafront mobility scooter marathon.
Now he’s racing against the clock to hit his £500 target as part of the ‘RBL 26 run ride walk’ fundraiser.
Nick (60), a former corporal in the Royal Corps of Transport, served in the army for 12 years driving all kinds of military vehicles all over the world before he left the services in 1998, retraining as a plumber.
But then two years ago military charity the RBL came to the veteran’s rescue when an old football injury worsened to the point where he became severely disabled, his mobility challenge eased by a pioneering operation to have a prosthetic leg inserted inside his own leg.
To help keep him mobile, the legion helped Nick get his mobility scooter under the personal independence payments scheme and he saw the marathon as a chance to repay them.
He said: “I measured a one-mile course on Barton seafront and then did 26 trips but unfortunately there were other events on that day and not many people about, so I'm still £180 shy of my £500 target for raising funds to help military veterans and serving soldiers, sailors and airmen and women.”
He added: “If there are any of you who would like to donate, then please go to my GoFundMe pages, look for my posts ‘Nick Lambert’, and please donate whatever you can – I must get it in by the end of the month!”
