NEW Forest District Council has installed five new solar bins at Lymington quay.

The hi-tech units use solar power to compact litter and can hold more waste than standard bins.

Technology sends an alert to the council when it is full, helping to reduce NFDC's carbon footprint by making less collections and fewer miles for its maintenance vehicles.

The pilot scheme is supported by the Welcome Back Fund, provided by the European Regional Development Fund.
