Launch of New Forest Monopoly seeks locals’ views on landmarks

A NEW Forest version of Monopoly is set to hit the shops next year after members of the public get the chance to nominate local landmarks for the board.

Game bosses predict suggestions will include the national park, Rufus Stone, Bolton’s Bench, Moors Valley and the 500-year-old Knightwood Oak, the oldest tree in the district.

Suggestions are also being sought for four of the game tokens, with the New Forest version likely to replace the dog with a pony, and a pair of walking boots instead of the famous singular boot.

Fans of the traditional top hat and ship will not be disappointed, however, as they are set to be retained.

Carol Seymour, business manager at local tourism group Go New Forest, said: “We are absolutely thrilled at the news that we are having our very own Monopoly game based on the wonderful New Forest destination.

“This exciting news is on top of our recent TripAdvisor Award of being the number one national park in Europe.

“We cannot wait to see the finished product and make the New Forest come to life in a brilliant and iconic board game.”

The news was announced yesterday (Thursday) at an event in Burley where Mr Monopoly was joined by representatives from Go New Forest and Winning Moves, which will make the game under licence from Hasbro.

The makers need ideas for 30 local landmarks which will feature on the well-known coloured squares of the boards, as well as customised Chance and Community Chest cards.

The game’s four train stations look set to become four pathways or cycleways as the makers felt the New Forest did not have a multitude of main line stations to select from, unlike the classic London game.

Custom games executive at Winning Moves, Ella Gibbs, said: “We expect to be wonderfully spoilt for choice putting this unique and official board for the New Forest together.

“The board will stretch from Lymington to Lyndhurst, Burley to Beaulieu and beyond.”

As reported in the A&T, a Christchurch version was produced in 2020 featuring the High Street, Southbourne Beach and Mudeford Quay.

Nominations for the New Forest game can be made via the official Monopoly New Forest edition Facebook page or by emailing newforest@winningmoves.co.uk

Entries must be submitted by 24th August.

The New Forest edition is expected to be in the shops next spring.
