A NEW FOREST man was killed in a car accident as he walked through Southampton last night (Monday).

Officers are investigating the death of a 47-year-old from Sway who was in collision with a BMW near Town Quay shortly before 10.40pm.

His name has not yet been released but the victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, said Hampshire police.

The driver of a BMW X5, a 39-year-old man from Southampton, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has since been released under investigation.

The force is appealing for witnesses to the incident, particularly anyone with dashcam footage that could help the investigation.

A police spokesperson said: “Investigations into the exact circumstances of the collision are ongoing and we are keen to speak with any witnesses.

“Were you in the Town Quay area between 10.30pm and 10.40pm last night? Maybe you have a dashcam in your car that captured footage of a BMW X5 in the area?”

Town Quay is beside Southampton Water where the Hythe ferry docks and from where the Southampton to Cowes ferry operates.

The police statement said: “We are appealing for witnesses following a collision between a BMW and pedestrian in Southampton last night.

“Officers were called to Town Quay just before 10.40pm.

“The pedestrian, a 47-year-old man from Sway, has sadly been pronounced dead.”
