AN award-winning artisan jam maker from the New Forest says she is still “pinching myself” after she was approached to supply one of the most iconic names in hospitality.

Jen Williams’ Naked Jam will be a staple in The Ritz London’s legendary afternoon teas after the hotel’s executive chef John Williams got in touch insisting the hotel wanted “the best”.

Based out of Silver Street in Sway, Jen makes her jam by hand in copper saucepans, in small batches, using seasonal, local fruit and flowers foraged on private estates in the New Forest, including the Chewton Glen hotel in New Milton which also uses her products.

“This is a real confidence boost for me and a comfort to know that my jam really is that good,” said Jen, who supplies the luxury Corinthia Hotel London and the Starhotels collection too.

“I’ve worked really hard for 10 years, and to get recognition from someone like John Williams, who is one of my heroes, is gratifying.”

The Ritz will also serve Naked Jam and marmalade with its breakfast offering, and has asked Jennifer to develop a range of condiments for the hotel, including ketchup and mayonnaise.

“They have complete confidence in me,” she said. “I’ve just received my first order for January – I keep having to pinch myself.”

Jen, who this year won a Great Taste award for her lemon and whiskey marmalade, will begin hosting a series of masterclasses in jam and marmalade making in the new year.

“The classes will be small and intimate, and participants will leave the workshop with 20-25 jars of the best jam they ever made,” she said. “It’s made using the bare ingredients – more fruit, less sugar and no additives or preservatives.”

As well as jams including raspberry and elderflower, rhubarb and may chang, and damson, Jen also makes honey, lemon curd, chilli jam, jellies, chutney and piccalilli. Her marmalade range includes lime and chilli, grapefruit and ginger, and Seville oranges.

Jen’s huge success has come at a welcome time, and like her customers in hospitality she has been hit hard by the pandemic.

“At one point the business just stopped dead,” she said. “Things have been getting better but once again we’re back to the stress of not knowing what’s going to happen or where we’ll be in the coming weeks. It’s heartbreaking to see the impact of all this on hospitality.

“Brexit also affected my business – I’ve just managed to get hold of glass after a four-month wait because of a shortage of materials used to make it. The price has also gone up by 40%.”

Jen is very hopeful for the future, though, and is currently in talks with a big retailer – so watch this space!
