Music fans turn out for Rock the Pier, organised by Hythe Pier Heritage Association
MUSIC fans were not deterred by the threat of rain as they turned out for Hythe’s annual Rock The Pier fundraiser.
The free event, organised by the Hythe Pier Heritage Association, took place on Saturday and included a busy programme of live music alongside community stalls and attractions.
First staged in 2018, it has grown year on year, particularly since its relocation to the promenade behind Hythe’s high street.
The association has been busy restoring the historic pier and railway after taking over the management of the structure from then owners Blue Funnel.
As reported in the A&T, last year the ferry, which connects the Waterside with Southampton, was at risk of being axed due to “unsustainable” losses, but Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel stepped in to take over the route.
Event spokesperson Alan Titheridge said: “From the moment the Stone Branches opened proceedings the large crowd of music lovers – not deterred by the constant threat of rain – were treated to a continuous, pulsating wall of sound until the Soul Catchers brought the show to a close almost seven hours later.”
He added one person had even posted on social media to say he could hear the music as he sailed past the area, adding: “Sounded like an absolute blast”.
Giving their time for free, other local bands performing on the day were Vinyl Beats, Davy Jones Locker, Mike and the Mojitos, REMBrandt and the Psychedelic Skies.
The show was compered by actor and singer Byron Witchell and Rozzy Turner, finalist in ITV’s singing competition The Voice.
It is not yet known how much has been raised at this year’s event, but organisers are hoping it will equal – or better – last year’s £9,000.
Alan added: “Hythe Pier Heritage Association would like to acknowledge the contribution of all the musicians and event volunteers who gave their time for free.
“A big thank you is [also] afforded to the sponsors.”
