Man dies after boat capsizes off Mudeford Quay

A MAN died after getting into trouble in the water off Mudeford Quay on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called at about 3.30pm to the incident in which a man in his 50s was in a boat that capsized, the A&T understands. He was unable to be saved by rescue teams and medics.

Southbourne Coastguard said it attended a “maritime medical incident” at the quay, which is a popular destination for tourists and the base for local fishing boats.

Mudeford RNLI was also scrambled to the incident as well as medics from South Western Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said the casualty was pulled from the water by its Highcliffe safety boat onto the lifeboat slipway where paramedics tried to save him and rushed him to hospital.

A Dorset Police spokesperson said: “Dorset Police was called at 4.07pm on Wednesday 4th September 2019 to a concern-for-welfare report of a man in the water at Mudeford Quay in Christchurch. Emergency services attended.

“Very sadly the man, aged in his 50s, was later pronounced dead at hospital. His family has been informed.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and enquiries are being carried out on behalf of the coroner.”
