NEW Milton is set to host a two-day community event marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day next spring.

The town council’s amenities committee recently granted permission for the Lions Club of New Milton & District to stage the VE80 commemoration on the recreation ground, off Whitefield and Old Milton roads.

No details have yet been provided of the activities and attractions planned for the festivities, which will take place on 3rd and 4th May.

Club president Alan Watson told the council the £3,000 donated for its cancelled Christmas festival and parade would be put towards the VE80 commemorations.

As reported in the A&T, the festive event planned for Saturday 23rd November was called off amid forecast high winds and heavy rain.

The amenities committee also allowed New Milton Pétanque Club to lay a short stretch of DDA (Disability Discrimination Act)-compliant footpath.

Estates and facilities manager Mark Jeffries told members the path within the rink area at Fawcett’s Field would come at no cost to the town council and not affect operations.
