Lymington Amateur Rowing Club to taken on sponsored ‘row to Paris’ to raise fund for boats

AS the 2024 Paris Olympics countdown begins, Lymington Amateur Rowing Club (LARC) members have planned a sponsored row to bolster the club’s boat fund.

The participants aim to cover the distance to Paris on rowing machines and then see how far they can ‘get back across the Channel’ in 24 hours.

Club captain Hugo Mills explained the challenge: “The Olympics always attracts a lot of interest from people of all ages who want to get into rowing, both to compete and for the health and wellbeing benefits.

“However, we’re limited at the moment by the number and type of boats we have, so we need to get ready by buying at least one new boat, suitable for younger and recreational rowers, in time for the Olympics so more local people can try and enjoy the sport.”

Supporters are encouraged to donate and to spectate on Saturday 10th February at town quay, outside Yachtmail, from 10am to 5pm or to visit the clubhouse at Lymington Shores from 5pm until 8pm, where the challenge will continue.

The bar will be open, and members will be available to talk to visitors about the club and the sport.

Event organiser, club parent representative and junior squad coach Sue Morant added: “Our junior members, in particular, are really excited about the challenge, so I’m hoping people will turn out in force to encourage them and show their support.”

LARC is a volunteer-run, non-profit club, which relies on membership and donations to run and to fund the demand across all ages for competitive and recreational rowing.

Supporters can donate by visiting gofundme.com/f/Lymo Row24 and follow the teams’ progress on the day by following LARC on Facebook or Instagram.
