Surfers Against Sewage put Lymington ahead of New Milton for plastic-free efforts
LYMINGTON is ahead of neighbouring town New Milton on work to make itself "plastic free", according to environmental pressure group Surfers Against Sewage (SAS).
The group's online interactive map lists New Milton as one of its "communities in progress".
Just down the road, however, Lymington has been rated a step ahead as "certified" for taking action on plastic waste.
An SAS spokesperson said: "By organising local action, committing to ditching avoidable single-use plastics and making a concerted effort to make alternatives readily available, communities everywhere are leading the fight against avoidable single-use plastics and the marine pollution it causes.
"Join the plastic-free movement by signing up for an individual action plan on our website today.
"Making some simple changes to your lifestyle and buying habits not only improves our environment but can also save you money.
"What's more, just imagine a world where our beaches and seashores are not blighted by plastic pollution. Plastic free coastlines is that vision. It's what people and the planet are crying out for and it's what we're working hard to achieve."
SAS estimates there are 51-trillion microscopic pieces of plastic in the oceans and that one in three fish caught for human consumption now contains plastic.
