Christchurch branch of Parkinson’s UK could be forced to shut if a new chair is not found
A CHARITY which has provided help, advice and friendship to those affected by Parkinson’s for over 40 years could be forced to close.
The Christchurch branch of Parkinson’s UK, which runs a monthly support group, needs a new chair and is urging volunteers to come forward to prevent its demise.
The organisation says it has a “big impact” on people’s lives, helping to ensure people with Parkinson’s can access meetings and activities that make a real difference to them. The role of chair provides leadership to the group and helps the committee work together to carry out its work effectively.
Claire Denby, local volunteer officer at Parkinson’s UK, said: “The Christchurch branch is a lifeline for people in the local area who are living with Parkinson’s, but we rely on volunteers to help us keep these groups running.
“Without the support from people like you, these groups could be forced to close.
“If you can spare a few hours a week, we’d love to welcome you to volunteer alongside the amazing people who are part of the Christchurch branch, because with your support we really can change lives.
“As well as making a big difference to people living with Parkinson’s in your local community, volunteering is a great opportunity to try something new, have new experiences, and meet new people.”
The branch also hosts regular tai chi classes, supports a weekly exercise class run by a physiotherapist, and works with two other local Parkinson’s branches to deliver a mini pop-up conference four times a year.
The Parkinson’s UK’s Christchurch branch meets on the last Monday of the month at St Catherine’s Hill Community Hall, 17 Marlow Drive, BH23 2RR, between 2pm to 6pm.
