A DISCOUNT supermarket’s staff sprang into action to chase a suspected shoplifter who targeted the New Milton branch.

An eyewitness who saw the drama unfold outside Lidl in Lymington Road reported that three store workers stopped a vehicle leaving a nearby car park.

Speaking to the A&T, the passer-by, who wanted to remain anonymous, recalled becoming suspicious of a woman sitting outside as she left at around 1pm last Sunday.

She saw her answer her phone and walk to the automatic entrance door, which opened before a man ran out.

“The next moment I saw three of the Lidl staff run out and basically chase him up the road,” she said.

“I was pretty impressed by how fast they were, and one of them had a broom or something.”

Driving out of the Lidl car park, she saw the male suspect get into a car parked in Oxey Close, joining two people already sitting inside.

“The lady who works in Lidl was stood in front of the car leaning onto the bonnet; she was taking photographs with her phone and there was quite a lot of shouting,” the witness continued.

The car’s occupants threw suspected stolen goods out of the windows, she said, before one of them got out and walked away.

She added: “It really didn’t work out well for them.

“I was very impressed by the speed and determination of the Lidl staff to catch and stop them.”

The A&T approached Lidl, but a spokesperson declined to go into detail about the incident.

“We can confirm that the police were contacted following an incident at our New Milton store on Sunday and we are supporting them in their investigation,” they said.

“As this is now a police matter, we are unable to provide any further information at this time.”
