Letters: Felling has spoiled the tree-lined gateway to my town

SIR - We have lived in New Milton for the past 48 years, and have never ceased to enjoy the approach to the town from Bashley along Fernhill Lane up to Ballard Lake.

This approach has also been commended numerous times over the years by visitors.

Who on earth authorised the removal of so many trees at the new rest home development?

They should hang their heads in shame, and do not come up with the “pat” response the developer will be carrying out a planting scheme.

It would take 100 years to replicate what has been destroyed.

It is to be hoped that the town council uses all in its powers to lobby New Forest District Council’s planning department to ensure that similar devastation does not occur at the proposed Fernmount Centre and Fernmount House site.

The national press has been advocating everybody, including schools, carry out tree planting schemes to help the environment, and here we are chopping mature trees down.

Very depressing!
