Letter: Milford site for 100 new homes is a flood risk

SIR – Photos I took on Saturday 30th January after a night of heavy rain confirm my concerns over the New Forest District Local Plan Strategic Site 7 to build 100 houses in the fields north of Manor Road, Milford.

The photos are of the field that opens onto the western end of the site and shows the water overflowing through the gate onto Manor Road, then onto the junction with Barnes Lane and then continuing into George Road.

Having lived in this area for over 30 years, I have noticed flooding in this area on numerous occasions, especially when horses were pastured on the field, when their impact on the ground turned the floods into a shallow lake. On one occasion I even observed a couple of ducks taking advantage of their new pond!

I fully recognise the need for new housing in our area but feel that in that particular area there should be some sort of a balance pond with trees, such as willows, planted round it to absorb the water, especially with the added run-off that would be caused by the building of new houses.

This would help mitigate the impact of new housing on the environment and prevent the misery of flooding for the occupants of new and existing house owners.
