Letter: Cycling promotes fitness and does not harm the environment

WITH reference to the letter from Mr or Ms ‘Name and address supplied’ in your letters page dated 9th August, whilst having some agreement with the letter, I do think the writer has missed one important point and that is many cyclists are also motor vehicle owners too!

I live in the Holbury area, and both my wife and I try to use our cycles in the immediate area as much as we possibly can. We also try and observe the Highway Code whilst doing so.

Cycling promotes fitness and does not harm the environment.

My late father once advised me when I was young to always try and allow an extra 15 minutes to get to your destination, and I have never forgotten that!

Your writer should try and adopt that approach, and it might not allow the pent-up feelings they appear to suffer when driving behind cyclists.

True, some cyclists do some stupid things on the roads, but so too do motorists. All too often one can hear or see speeding cars, vans or lorries, some with noisy, throaty exhaust pipes possibly with the baffles removed.

A glance in every Lymington Times’ court reports will reveal motorists fined for various offences including drink/drug driving, no insurance, tax or MOT speeding, etc.

So personally I think that overall things are balanced between the motorist and the cyclist and a bit of ‘British tolerance’ would not go amiss!
