Mudeford RNLI lifeboat crew rescues kayaker accidentally capsized by passing vessel off Avon Beach

A KAYAKER needed to be rescued after being capsized by a passing vessel off a Mudeford beach.

The alarm was raised shortly before 5.30pm on Tuesday, with RNLI lifeguards on Avon Beach having been unable to reach the casualty, who had got into difficulty about 600 metres from the shore.

In response, the Mudeford Servant Atlantic 85 lifeboat launched about 10 minutes later, finding him around 5.45pm towards the Long Groyne at Hengistbury Head.

He had lost his paddle and was clinging to his kayak after it was accidentally tipped over by the wash from a craft, which then turned around to help.

The casualty was safely brought on board the lifeboat and, found not to require medical attention, he was taken to shore at Mudeford Quay.

Volunteer Helm Justin O’Connell said afterwards: “This shout was a great example of how the lifeguards and lifeboat crew work together to keep people safe on the water.

“Although the lifeguards had eyes on the casualty, he was drifting too far out for them to reach.

“Their prompt action meant we could reach him in a few minutes and bring him to safety. We’re delighted he was recovered safe and well.”
