Ellingham Show organisers hopeful event will go ahead in August

THE organisers of Ellingham Show will not give any guarantees the event will go ahead as planned this summer.

The show's chairman Steve Thompson told the A&T he was hopeful the event on 14th August will happen, but says he cannot make any promises at this stage.

Even if all Covid restrictions are lifted by the government on 21st June, the committee faced many other hurdles, he explained.

"We must be absolutely confident that we can deliver a safe and happy show for everybody," he said.

"There are questions over whether our regular, loyal volunteers be available, and we could well be asked to introduce additional safety measures."

Mr Thompson said the society was also concerned about planned road works on the A31 over the summer, which may put people off coming.

"We are really determined to make the show happen if we can," he said. "But if there are any additional conditions or restrictions – and therefore costs – we will be forced to call it off."

The committee is appealing for new members to help organise this and next year's event, which will be the show's 75th anniversary.

"Our loyal volunteers and committee members have devoted many years to the show," said Mr Thompson. "But there is always room for new ideas, talent and enthusiasm.

"All skills are welcome – we’d especially like to hear from anybody with a professional background in health and safety or project management."
