PLANS to expand Sway village hall to accommodate a popular preschool and Scouts group have been granted permission.

The proposed extension to the Middle Road facility, which is often booked up, will involve a new 16-metre section of building protruding into Stanford Rise green.

It will contain a hall, office, study room, kitchen, three unisex toilets and a disabled toilet, internal and external storage and an outdoor play area for children attending the Little Flyers Preschool.

However, after submitting a planning application to the national park authority in January 2021, progress on the scheme stalled after concerns were raised about noise from a proposed air source heat pump and children’s play area.

Under plans, space to the north will be used by the Little Flyers Preschool and the relocated 4th New Forest South Scouts group, which also comprises Beavers and Cubs.

The application submitted by Sway Parish Council also prompted concerns from neighbours that trees would be damaged.

In a planning report, NPA case officer Ann Braid said three letters of objection had been received raising concerns over the drainage, lay out, and impact on Stanford Green, which has recently been improved.

Concerns were also expressed about future noise but these had now been addressed with a noise management plan, she said, and the agreed installation of acoustic fencing before the outdoor play space is brought into use.

As part of the scheme, trees will be protected during construction work.
