A LYMINGTON golfer played by torchlight and through the rain in a 24-hour challenge which raise £3,500 for mental health charity Mind.

Lee Marsh (53) completed over 120 holes, more than 1,500 strokes and covered 32 miles as he made his way around the course at Lymington Golf Centre.

He was joined by 22 other players for the event which started at 7pm on 21st June, including fellow members of the Musketeers – a Lymington-based community group that raises funds for good causes.

Lee told the A&T: “I didn’t stop at all, as I knew that if I did I would not start again.

“Some friends who I regularly play golf with joined me for several rounds throughout the 24 hours and were a huge help and support.

“Without them I would not have been able to complete it.

“My family were also a great help. My wife and three daughters were all involved in keeping me fed and watered as well as recording scores and following me round.

“Luckily, I took the next day off work as I was struggling to move for about 48 hours after.”

He added: “Playing at night was interesting, particularly as it was raining as well. But we kept going and did well in the end.

“There were 20 birdies, 70 pars and 30 bogeys plus a few double bogeys. A total of 1,535 strokes were played in all.”

The money raised from the event will be donated to mental health charity Mind.

Lee said: “We chose Mind due to the focus on mental health following the pandemic and lockdowns and the stress and anxiety it has caused; something I have also suffered from in the past.

“The amount raised was £3,500 and our target was £2,000 – so we are very pleased with the outcome.”

Lee and his fellow Musketeers have raised close to £40,000 over the past 10 years for causes including Oakhaven Hospice, Cancer Research and the Stroke Association.

Fundraising challenges have included kayaking around the Isle of Wight and twice motorcycling along the entire UK coast.
