A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched to build a new skate park in Hythe after the previous facility fell into disrepair and was removed.

Based next to the former police station in Jones Lane, it was deemed no longer fit for purpose in 2017 after inspections revealed the tarmac needed replacing, along with the ramps and other equipment.

Now a new group, Waterside Skate & Ride, has been set up with the help of Hythe and Dibden Parish Council member Cllr Matthew Kitcher, who is vice-chairman.

He has started an online fundraising page in a bid to gather the cash to revive the facility in the parish.

Cllr Kitcher said: “Since becoming the youngest councillor on my council, it was my pledge to make life better for young people.

“Over the last few months we have formed a committee and are in the process of setting up a local charity for the aim of getting our beloved skate park back up and running.

"It was such a shame to lose our old one, however it just wasn’t fit for public use.”

So far the online Go Fund Me page has raised £115. The group has also received a £100 donation from both New Forest District Council representatives for the area, Cllr Stephanie Osborne and Cllr Malcolm Wade.

Cllr Kitcher added: “I would also like to thank the public that have supported us, whether it be donating or positive messages.

"It’s great to know that we are doing something for our community and that people are supporting us.”
