Police alerted to suspicious gorse fire in Fawley Road, Hythe, as fuel container found

POLICE have been alerted after a discarded fuel container was found near a gorse and grassland blaze tackled by firefighters in Hythe last night (Thursday).

The alarm was raised around 9.20pm as flames engulfed a 70x20m area off Fawley Road.

Crews from the town and Hardley spent nearly three hours battling the fire, which they believed may have been started deliberately.

A Twitter post by Hardley crew afterwards said: “Mobilised to a fire in the open in Hythe, 70mm and 45mm hose run around the fire to contain and extinguish gorse fire.

“Cause of fire doubtful and a fuel can was recovered from the scene. Information handed to police.”
