THERE will be three days of free parking in town and village centres across the New Forest in December in an effort to give business a boost.

It is hoped the move will encourage residents to shop locally during the festive season and will see free parking in New Forest District Council-owned car parks in villages and towns on Saturday 4th December, which is the National Small Business Saturday event, as well as Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th.

Parish and town councils can also request a separate, fourth date to benefit from free parking to support their Christmas events.

Users will still have to pay at amenity and coastal car parks.

Cllr Michael Harris OBE, NFDC cabinet member for business, high streets and tourism, said: "The impact of the pandemic led to a change in shopping habits, with consumers re-discovering their high streets and the advantages of shopping locally.

"We want to build on this, as we see our high streets as the heart of our towns and villages and an important part of our local economy.

"We hope the free parking will encourage people who already shop nearby to continue to do so, and also for people who haven’t been to their local shops recently to go and take a look at what is available right on their doorstep."
