Alice Lisle pub at Rockford Green, near Ringwood, cancels its fireworks spectacular after public backlash over animal welfare
A PUB has cancelled its fireworks display after a public backlash over the welfare of Forest animals.
The Alice Lisle at Rockford Green, near Ringwood, had advertised a “spectacular” bonfire night this evening (Wednesday).
However, it has now cancelled its 7.30pm fireworks display – set to run’ for around 15 minutes – and says it understands the “distress” it could have caused.
A statement from the pub said: “We have heard the concerns of the New Forest community loud and clear.
“We now fully understand and appreciate the distress a fireworks display would cause to both local residents and the wonderful wildlife around us, including livestock and pets. We wholeheartedly agree that the welfare of all animals in the Forest is paramount.”
It adds: “After careful consideration and listening to your feedback, we have made the decision to cancel the fireworks display.
“We are committed to being a supportive and responsible part of this community. While the fireworks are off, the party is still on. We will be moving forward with live music, great food [and] face painting.
“We have listened, and we have acted. Now, we are asking for your support – please join us. Your attendance will not only help us make it a great evening, but also allow us to help raise awareness for the care of the New Forest's people and animals.”
Prior to its cancellation, locals had shared their concerns on the pub’s Facebook page. One wrote: “I have a horse very close to your pub that is going to be terrified by fireworks.
“I can’t just move him for 15 minutes – unfortunately that’s not how it works with livestock. Not to mention the other horses, sheep, and livestock there as well. It really is incredibly irresponsible.”
Another said: “I won't be visiting the pub if you go ahead with this. There's literally a nature reserve right next to you, and animals surrounding the area who will die from the stress this will cause them. Don't do it, do the right thing.”
A petition launched on Change.Org is calling for all fireworks to be banned in the Forest. So far it has attracted more than 400 signatures.
It states: “It's time for us to act decisively to protect this precious natural environment. We urge local authorities to implement a ban on the use of fireworks within the New Forest.
“This would include regulating public displays and private use, particularly during sensitive times for wildlife such as the breeding season.”
It adds: “The New Forest is one of the UK's most cherished natural landscapes, providing a sanctuary for a diverse array of wildlife, including several endangered species.
“However, the use of fireworks poses a significant threat to this fragile ecosystem. Fireworks create loud noises and bright lights that can terrify animals, leading to distress, disorientation, and sometimes even fatal outcomes.
“This environmental impact is compounded by the potential for wildfires, especially during the drier months, endangering both wildlife and local communities.”
