Environment Agency warns Becton Bunny at Barton and Christchurch Harbour could flood

There may be flooding tonight and tomorrow in Christchurch and Barton, the Environment Agency has warned.

The EA has announced a flood alert for Christchurch Harbour and tidal stretches of the Lower Stour and Avon where there will be “higher than normal tides”.

The high water is expected to be 11.15pm today, with flooding possible two hours either side.

Becton Bunny is also under threat, the EA says, because of an an increased risk of flooding due to thunderstorms expected to hit from midday.

Flooding could occur, says the Environment Agency

It states: “Given the nature of thunderstorms, there is low confidence in where the heaviest rain will fall geographically.

“However, in some locations, very significant amounts of rain – potentially up to 70mm – may fall in a short period of time.

“If this volume of rain falls in New Milton, then this could cause Becton Bunny to flood. Due to the small size of the river channel, flooding can occur within as little as 20 minutes from the start of the heaviest rainfall.”

As a precautionary measure, the EA recommends residents install flood protection before the rain is due, or consider moving any valuables from lower lying gardens.
