First Covid-19 death in a month across New Forest and BCP Council areas

THERE were zero coronavirus deaths in the New Forest this week, but one fatality did occur in the BCP Council area.

The latest weekly report from by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) released on Tuesday revealed a death happened in a home setting.

It is the first instance of someone dying due to Covid-19 in the two areas for about a month.

The figures showed new cases remained low in both areas, although there was a slight rise on the rate compared with the previous week in the New Forest.

Last week, the rate had been five per 100,000 people, but the 14 new cases equated to a rate of 7.8.

That rate was the same in the BCP area – which is down from 10.6 in the previous week – and the area had 31 new cases in the latest week.

The figures compared well against the national picture across the UK; there were 15,842 new cases, with a rate of 23.7 per 100,000.

The updated vaccination figures showed that in the New Forest district 120,916 people aged 18 or over have had their first dose, while 80,115 have had both.

In the BCP area 235,524 people have had their first jab, and 155,022 both.

The provisional fatality figures from the ONS related to instances where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate up to 14th May, but were registered up to 22nd May.
