Police probe suspicious fire at derelict commercial property in Bridge Street, Christchurch

POLICE have launched an investigation into a large blaze which gutted a derelict commercial property in Christchurch.

The alarm was raised just before 6.30pm yesterday (Tuesday) as flames engulfed the building in Bridge Street, and three local fire crews responded along with colleagues from Redhill and Springbourne.

Equipped with breathing apparatus, the firefighters spent over an hour battling to contain the emergency and vented smoke outside.

They remained at the scene until around 11.25pm damping down hot spots.

A spokesperson for the Dorset force said: “It is believed the fire was started deliberately.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the incident. No arrests have been made.”
