Officers arrested the Sprinter driver, a 40-year-old man from Dibden Purlieu, on suspicion of drink and drug-driving. He was later released under investigation.

Road users were urged to avoid the area as the route was shut in both directions, between the A326 Marchwood bypass and Southampton Road.

The closure remained in place for several hours while crews dealt with the incident and carried out investigations.

Police appealed for witnesses to come forward as they continued to probe the circumstances of the fatality.

A force spokesperson said: “If you witnessed this collision, saw either vehicle in the moments leading up to this incident, or have relevant dash cam footage, please call 101 or report online via our website [hampshire.police.uk], using reference 44230487842.”
