Council reveals plans to expand Sway village hall

Sway village hall is regularly booked to capacity

PLANS have been unveiled to expand the village hall at Sway to accommodate a popular pre-school and Scouts group.

The proposed extension to the Middle Road facility, which is often booked up, would involve a new 16-metre section of building protruding into Stanford Rise green.

It would be around 15 metres wide and contain a hall, office, study room, kitchen, three unisex toilets and a disabled toilet, internal and external storage and an outdoor play area for children attending the onsite Little Flyers Pre-School.

Under the plans, an existing smaller hall could also be transformed into a community café or other village facility.

The application, which has been submitted to the national park authority by Sway Parish Council, also set out how trees will be protected or replanted.

It stated the extended space to the north will be used by the Little Flyers Pre-School and the relocated 4th New Forest South Scouts group, which also comprises Beavers and Cubs units.

It added: “The need for an additional hall space arises because the existing hall is regularly booked and there isn’t sufficient capacity to accommodate every group, the Scouts, as well as Little Flyers with the floor space that they ideally require.”

Some trees along the boundary of the village hall and Stanford Rise green would need to be cut down to make way for the new building, the parish council said, but it proposed these would be replanted in another part of the recreation ground.

The floor under the entrance lobby and office will be a piled raft construction to protect a large oak tree to the east.

Describing the proposal as an “opportunity to invest in the future of the community building”, the parish council’s application said that allowing the facility would support the next generation of Sway residents.

The NPA is due to make a decision in the coming weeks.
