The Castle Pantry tea rooms at Highcliffe Castle have re-opened after a revamp by new operator Adventure Attractions
HIGHCLIFFE Castle’s newly revamped tea rooms have been officially opened.
The venue, which has an outdoor terrace overlooking the castle, has been closed since November 2022, with refreshments served to visitors from a food truck in the grounds last year.
Adventure Attractions took over the running of the site, now called The Castle Pantry, and has carried out “extensive renovations” to bring about a fresh look.
“It blends the charm of a traditional British tea room with modern comforts,” said a spokesperson for the firm. “Originally built in the 1950s for Claretian monks, the space was later transformed into public tea rooms in the late 20th century. Now, it stands ready to welcome guests into its warm, inviting atmosphere once again.”
Serving hot meals, including full English breakfast, jacket potatoes and homemade soup, along with quiche, salads, vegan boards, ploughmans, ciabattas, and traditional afternoon and cream teas, the cafe will open daily between 9am and 5pm.
Chris Liddard, general manager of The Castle Pantry tea room, shared his gratitude for the community’s support: “We have been incredibly happy with the response and warm welcome received so far.
“Highcliffe Castle, known for its rich history and breathtaking scenery, continues to attract both local visitors and tourists. We are excited to welcome locals and tourists alike and aim to delight our visitors with our delectable food options.
“The Castle Pantry will also serve as a versatile venue for various events, from intimate gatherings to community functions.
“By collaborating with local suppliers like the award-winning Shelley’s Bakery, which was recently recognised as one of the top five bakers in BCP, the tea rooms ensure high-quality products for their patrons.
“To foster a sense of community, the tea room has introduced a loyalty reward card for regular visitors and is inviting local groups and clubs to consider hosting meetings or small events at the tea rooms.
“We are keen to become a key local community hub.”
Highcliffe Castle owner BCP Council put the catering contract out to tender after the previous cafe operator Aramark was forced to hand back the keys in 2022 as it failing to make a profit. It had the lease since 2017.
As reported, there was dismay that it had taken the council so long to find a new operator.
Among those businesses that put in to take over the tearooms were the owners of Barton’s Cliffhanger Restaurant, who previously ran it for many years.
