Disruption for rail commuters after ‘stranded’ car on track at Brockenhurst blocks lines and shuts stretch of A337 Lyndhurst Road
COMMUTERS face disruption today (Thursday) after a “stranded” car on the track at Brockenhurst’s level crossing blocked all lines and shut a main road in both directions.
South Western Railway announced around 7.15am that trains could be cancelled, delayed or revised because of “a problem at a level crossing”.
A picture shared online showed a car across the tracks at the village level crossing.
Shortly before 8am, Hampshire County Council’s traffic and travel update service reported the full closure of a stretch of the A337 Lyndhurst Road at Brookley Road.
It said this was “due to an incident at the level crossing”, and warned of “delays in both directions building”.
But, shortly after 8am, HCC announced the closure had been lifted and all delays were gone.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to reports of a stranded vehicle on the tracks at a level crossing near Brockenhurst Railway Station just after 7am today (26 September).
“Officers attended and the occupants were located, the vehicle was recovered from the tracks and words of advice were given to the driver.
“There is no further investigation.”
Around the same time, SWR announced lines had reopened, but it later said disruption was expected to continue until 5pm.
SWR tickets are being accepted on Cross Country services via any reasonable route across the network, as well as selected buses.
These buses include Bluestar 6 between Southampton Central and Lymington Town, and Morebus’s X2 and X1 between Bournemouth and Lymington Town.
Tickets can also be used on Salisbury Reds X7 and X7R between Totton and Southampton Central.
A spokesperson said: “For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.
“We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey.”
Those preferring to continue their journey on local buses can check traveline.info but SWR tickets are not valid on these.
