Bird life inspires new Sway railway station mural to take flight
THE beauty and diversity of local bird life is celebrated in a new mural at Sway railway station.
Featuring an array of species from the Dartford Warbler to Woodlarks and Hawfinches, the new installation has been created by artists Jenny Tarr and Alison Joy Schultz.
As well as depicting the national park’s vibrant winged population, the theme of birds is also a metaphorical message of freedom and hope, linking to a theme of connection.
Created using spray paint, stencils, household paint, graphite sticks, and stamping, the artists say the new display also celebrates creativity and intuitive mark-making
Speaking at a recent launch event, Jenny said: “We believe in the power of creativity. So often, public art is only given a home in big, bustling cities, but we argue that it is, if anything, even more important in rural areas.
“This mural offers a moment of joy in the hecticness of life, a pause to breathe, and a reminder to look up and see the birds. For there, joy awaits.”
South Western Railway spokesperson Cliff Bennett said: “It’s wonderful to see how the artwork has really brightened up the platform and to see local communities involved in their local stations.”
The new installation has been supported by the Friends of Sway Station, who hope it will help create a welcoming environment for passengers.
Ann Moirano from FOSS explained: “The waving grasses theme that we chose for our nearby planter compliments perfectly the uplifting birds in flight, so beautifully depicted in the new mural.”
