Big screen at Christchurch to show coronation of King Charles and Windsor Castle concert

THE coronation of King Charles will be beamed onto a giant screen in Christchurch thanks to a share of £1m in government funding.

BCP Council is inviting people to bring chairs and a picnic to The Quomps on Saturday 6th May to watch the crowning of the new monarch broadcast live from Westminster Abbey.

On Sunday 7th May, people can again bring picnics to the same site for the town’s part in the nationwide Coronation Big Lunch.

Later that day the screen will show the special coronation concert performed at Windsor Castle.

The screen has been made possible by a handout approved by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Cllr Beverley Dunlop, BCP Council cabinet member for tourism, culture and vibrant places, said: “Some of our residents may remember the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, but for the large majority of us, this will be the first time witnessing a coronation event.

“We’re lucky to have been chosen to receive this funding from DCMS and I hope everyone makes the most of these celebrations and gets involved with all the community events that are taking place across the conurbation.”

Further celebratory events across the BCP conurbation are being planned for the coronation bank holiday weekend. For more information visit bcpcouncil.gov.uk/coronation

As reported in the A&T, a big screen is also planned on the day at New Milton’s recreation ground, off Whitefield Road, as the centrepiece of a family event with musical acts and performances.

Lymington and Pennington Town Council is holding a parade and picnic at Woodside park in Rookes Lane from 11am-4pm on Sunday 7th May.
