Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Rev Justin Welby visits St Michael’s & All Angels Church in Lyndhurst
THE Archbishop of Canterbury was given a warm welcome when he visited a New Forest church for a special breakfast.
The Most Rev Justin Welby met the congregation at St Michael’s & All Angels Church in Lyndhurst as part of a weekend visit to the Diocese of Winchester to see local initiatives in the region.
Food including croissants, pancakes and fruit was enjoyed by all before the Archbishop was presented with a paper mitre, mug and tea towel by local children.
The Archbishop shared his life story and journey with his own Christian faith, and took part in a question and answer session before meeting and chatting to those present, which included members of St Michael’s as well as those from churches in Minstead and Emery Down.
Organiser David Potterton said: “We feel blessed that Bishop Justin has taken the time to see us, and the uplift that gives and the sense of being noticed and part of the wider church.”
He also visited churches and projects across the diocese, as well as Winchester Prison and Southampton Docks.
Archbishop Justin said: “This visit has been absolutely fantastic. I think the memorable thing for me is the sheer variety of what we've done.
“I have found, in the diocese, a huge willingness and desire to be those who share their faith and to bring others in, and to form community. I am overwhelmed by the sheer hard-working dedication of the people who work in the diocese and of the lay people and clergy who seek to serve the Lord in all that they do.”
The Bishop of Winchester, Rt Rev Philip Mounstephen, added it had been “fantastic” to visit various projects, initiatives, clubs and groups, adding: “It really touches my heart to see that and encourages me immensely.”
