LYMINGTON Community Centre is set to plough more than £800,000 into renovating its cafe and kitchen.

The community centre in New Street has submitted plans to New Forest District Council to demolish and replace its existing single-storey cafe and kitchen.

Centre manager Rachel Smith said the proposed overhaul – which would include fitting large windows to overlook a newly landscaped garden – is part of a £2m improvement programme.

Ms Smith said: “This building dates back to the 1950s or maybe earlier and the kitchen we have is very old too.

“That’s why we want to replace it with a nice, bright, airy little cafe that will be connected to our cinema.

“That way people can come out of a screening and come straight to the bar or the cafe for something to eat or drink.

“We think the cafe will be the perfect place for a lovely little drinks reception.”

Ms Smith added: “We plan to move the kitchen from where it is currently to the other side of the cafe/kitchen area.

“One side of the cafe will be a glass wall so people can enjoy the view while they eat. We plan to have 36 covers.

“At the moment the kitchen and cafe has a nautical theme which we will almost certainly carry over during the renovation.

“The budget for the cafe and kitchen work includes the budget to landscape the garden it overlooks.

“The garden already has a lovely relaxing feel to it, but we will be doing some landscaping to it and planting a herb garden for the kitchen to use.

“We hope to begin these works next spring although it depends how much funding we can raise.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the work completed. Our current cafe and kitchen was only ever meant to be a temporary structure, so it will be nice to see it replaced.”

As part of its ongoing £2m renovation, the centre recently had a new lift fitted.

Plans are also in place to reconfigure the layout of the building’s toilets.
