A PERFORMANCE by drag artist Rude Velvet was the highlight of a packed-out fundraising night for the area’s first New Forest Pride later this summer.

Standing 6ft 8in even without high heels, Rude Velvet – the self-styled “giant with an even bigger voice” – had the audience cheering during the show at Lymington’s King’s Arms pub.

Hannah Phillips, founder of New Forest Pride (NFP) said: “She went down a storm, she was amazing.”

The all-day event raised money for the area’s first pride event to be held in New Milton in August.

Hannah said: “It was a great success. There was a lovely family atmosphere and everybody really enjoyed themselves.

“It was lovely to see two groups of people who might not normally be at a social event together getting along so well.

“The local people who aren’t members said they had really appreciated being invited along to join in.”

The fundraiser kicked off with a barbecue for the local community and members of NFP. Later there was an evening show featuring Rude Velvet and former X-Factor star Russell Jones Jnr.

Entrance was by donations on the door which started at £1. The full amount raised was over £800 which Hannah described as “incredible”.

She added: “We literally put it all together about two weeks before the event.

“It was complete madness. The King’s Arms was the first pub we asked to host the event and they said ‘yes’ straight away, which was really good of them.

“Rude Velvet was a scream and Russell was also really good. We were grateful to have such great talent at the event.

“All in all about 500 people attended the fundraiser, the pub was completely packed. We could not have hoped for such a successful do.”

A raffle helped to boost the amount collected which will go towards NFP’s main pride event on 20th August at New Milton recreation ground.

Rude Velvet will make another appearance, plus performances by former X-Factor star Sam Callaghan and The Voice competitor Amrik Channah.
