New Forest Film Festival postponed
The New Forest Film Festival held its inaugural event last year

THE second New Forest Film Festival has been postponed until next year after its organising committee said it would “irresponsible” for it to go ahead.

Part of Film: New Forest is a flagship New Forest District Council project to entice film and television crews to the area. Its cancellation is a blow to the area’s economy after last year’s inaugural nine-day event boosted the district by £15,000.

However, its short-film competition, sponsored by art and education charity SPUD, will go ahead. Organisers are seeking 10-minute pieces by local film makers on the subject of ‘cleanse’ in four categories: best local and best smartphone films by both under and over 18s.

Natasha Davies, project lead officer, said “The executive steering group feel, like many event organisers, that it would be irresponsible to continue planning for this year’s event.

“Instead we look forward to planning the wider New Forest Film Festival for 2021 while supporting our partner SPUD with their short film competition Cleanse.”

Tom Sofikitis, SPUD operations manager, said “With plenty of time to go until the competition closes, we are really looking forward to viewing all the short films and seeing how the theme has been interpreted.

“There is an incredible amount of talent in and around the New Forest, so it is a fantastic opportunity for filmmakers to get involved with a local festival.”

To add an incentive, entry fees on Film Freeway have been scrapped.  All entries must be submitted by 1st August to be judged by industry experts on the panel ahead of and awards evening on 26th September, which will either be held virtually online or at Sway Cinema.
