Police officers attacked after helping drunk man lying in the road

POLICE were assaulted as they responded to reports of a drunk man lying unconscious in a road in Hythe on Sunday night.


The alarm was raised shortly before 11pm, and officers were subjected to abuse and aggression after escorting a man to the side of Fawley Road.

They arrested the 24-year-old from Southampton on suspicion of a public order offence, when he then attacked two officers.

He was subsequently further detained on suspicion of assaulting emergency service workers before being released under investigation as enquiries continue.

A police spokesperson said afterwards: “Officers escorted the man to the side of the road where he became abusive and aggressive towards them and members of the public in the vicinity.

“A 24-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of committing a public order offence.

“He then assaulted two police officers as they attempted to engage with him and was subsequently further arrested on suspicion of assaulting emergency service workers. He was later released under investigation, pending further enquiries.”
