What’s On: The Rocky Horror Show, Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth
IT’S time for theatre fans to dig out their wigs, corsets and lab coats as Richard O’Brien’s classic The Rocky Horror Show plays at Bournemouth Pavilion.
Since its first appearance at the Royal Court Theatre in June 1973, the cross-dressing extravaganza has become one of the world’s best-loved stage events, touring worldwide and translated into more than 20 languages.
The current production is directed by Christopher Luscombe, and features musical classics like Sweet Transvestite, Dammit Janet and The Time Warp.
It follows the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky-clean college kids who meet Dr Frank’n’Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house while on their way to visit their former professor.
It is an adventure they’ll never forget as the duo’s inhibitions and conventions are put to a test as they experience a world they had never imagined.
The Rocky Horror Show first began life in 1973 before an audience of just 63 people in the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs. In 1975 it was transformed into a film called The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which took over US$135 million at the box office and is still shown in cinemas around the world today. Many stars including Russell Crowe, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Jerry Springer, Jason Donovan and Meatloaf have appeared in The Rocky Horror Show over the past 52 years.
The Rocky Horror Show is billed as a guaranteed party, blending science-fiction, horror, comedy and music – and encouraging audience participation in the form of the most outrageous fancy dress imaginable.
It is at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre from Monday 3rd to Saturday 8th February. Tickets are from £25. For more info and bookings visit www.bournemouthpavilion.co.uk or call the box office on 0300 500 0595.
