Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Gins Clubhouse in Beaulieu to mark 60th anniversary

OFFERING panoramic views of Beaulieu River and across to the Isle of Wight, Gins Clubhouse is the perfect summertime setting in which to enjoy some delicious food and take in the stunning vista.

But due to its rather remote location ticked away on the banks of the river and a distinct lack of signage due to its positioning amid Beaulieu Estate-owned land, it could surely be described as a hidden gem.

The clubhouse, home of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, is open to members and non-members alike, and is this year celebrating its 60th anniversary.

Commodore Trevor Watson, who lives in Milford, is making efforts to raise the profile of the club, which he said benefits from one of the best views on the Solent. “When the cruise liners go out it really is fantastic,” he said. “We have a very special location, and we also have a first class chef.”

On the ever-changing menu is Isle of Wight burger, fish pie, chilli hot dog, and scampi, along with specials like garlic king prawn and monk fish salad and guinea fowl with mash, cider sauce and seasonal veg.

The restaurant, which boasts a large sun terrace, is hosting Friday paella and pink fizz nights throughout August, for which booking is advised, and every Sunday between 12.30pm and 4.30pm traditional British roasts are served up. Additionally, on the last Sunday of every month the club welcomes a local jazz player.

To mark 60 years, a party and regatta will be held on 7th and 8th September, featuring shoreside games, a ‘60s-themed disco with optional fancy dress, and barbecue food.

Manager Stuart Earp is also keen to promote the restaurant’s festive lunches on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, starting on 28th November and running throughout December.

“I know it’s a little early in the year to be talking about it, but there was such a wonderful atmosphere in the clubhouse last Christmas, with everyone singing festive carols,” he said.

“It’s a set three-course menu, and it’s excellent value at £24 a person.”

While the boating community make up the bulk of the club’s customers, the bar and restaurant is also very popular with cycling groups, and the site is used for private functions like weddings, birthday parties and wakes.

“This is a facility for all the boats on the river, including Beaulieu River Sailing club,” said Trevor. “We hold a lot of rallies here, and there’s a fair amount of racing from Beaulieu too.

“Anyone who drops by here will find it a very friendly place to come and a warm welcome is guaranteed.”

Following flooding earlier this year, the club is undergoing a refurb of its ground floor, and within the next couple of weeks will open brand new toilets and changing facilities.

Members of the club benefit from discounted food and drink in the bar and restaurant, a free water taxi service, free short stays and discounted overnight stays on the walk-ashore pontoon, use of club dinghies and kayaks, free race entry, 24/7 access to the ground floor facilities at Gins, access to exclusive social events, a full calendar of cruising events, and free membership for children and grandchildren under 18.

Gins is located at the end of Gins Lane. There is a gate at the entrance to the lane, which will open automatically and does not require a code.
