The 39 Steps, Salisbury Playhouse

FOLLOWING a critically acclaimed 10-year run in London’s West End, iconic spy thriller The 39 Steps will be at Salisbury Playhouse on the first stop of a UK tour.

The show is adapted by Patrick Barlow from the 1915 novel by John Buchan, and is co-produced by Wiltshire Creative, Mercury Theatre Colchester and Octagon Theatre Bolton.

The 39 Steps was a 1935 British spy thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

It centred on a Canadian civilian in London called Richard Hannay, who gets caught up in preventing an organisation of spies called The 39 Steps from stealing British military secrets.

Mistakenly accused of the murder of a counter-espionage agent, Hannay goes on the run to Scotland and becomes tangled up with Pamela while hoping to stop the spy ring and clear his name.

The stage adaptation also follows the dashing Richard Hannay as he embarks on a thrilling adventure filled with daring antics, romantic encounters and ghastly murders. Audiences will embark on a whirlwind of suspense taking them from the bustling streets of London to the remote Scottish Highlands, as four talented actors play more than 150 characters.

The show is hailed as an exhilarating escapade that will have audiences laughing, gasping, and cheering for more! The comedy has won both an Olivier and Tony Award.

Mateo Oxley plays Richard Hannay, and Mei Mei Macleod plays Annabelle/ Pamela/ Margaret. Danielle Bird plays Clown 1 and Phil Yarrow plays Clown 2.
