Joseph and the Amazing Techincolor Dreamcoat is on stage at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton

IT’S been a theatrical staple for the past five decades, but the immense popularity of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat showed no sign of waning as it burst into the stage at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre.

Very loosely based on the biblical story of Joseph, the favourite son of Issac, the high energy production told almost completely through song was the first collaboration for musical theatre royalty Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

However, for a show with its origins in the 1970s the joyful production, directed by Laurence Connor, continues to be a 21st century masterpiece packed with energy, colour and infectious enthusiasm.

The story is quite simple – Joseph is the most loved of his father’s 12 sons, and when he is gifted a colourful coat, the jealously of his siblings boils over. After initially plotting to kill Joseph, the brothers opt for the slightly better option of selling him into slavery in Egypt.

But Joseph’s remarkable ability to come out on top – aided by his talent for interpreting dreams – eventually sees him rise up to become the Pharoah’s second in command.

However, the story doesn’t end there, as having endured years of hardship, Joseph’s brothers begin to feel remorse for their cruelty to him. When the brothers are finally reunited, the question is: can Joseph really forgive and forget?

With an incredible stage presence, Christina Bianco shone as the production’s narrator, demonstrating both vocal prowess and the ability to deliver high energy dance moves. Almost constantly on stage for the entire production, she seamlessly transitioned between storytelling and performing in the neverending medley of hits. Her comic timing was spot on, and her interactions with the younger cast members were perfectly delivered.

In the iconic role of Joseph, Adam Filipe was magnificent in his ability to portray the many elements of his character’s story – from youthful innocence to the unwavering confidence of the Pharoah’s right-hand man. His vocal performance was superb, particularly in the iconic Close Every Door and Any Dream Will Do.

As one of the many A-list stars to have played Joseph previously, it was delightful to see Jason Donovan in the role of the Pharaoh, making a special appearance for just the Southampton leg of the tour. With showmanship and charisma, his rendition of Song of The King was a vibrant highlight of the colourful show.

The decision to include a significant number of children in ensemble roles was also a triumph, as the stars of the future stepped up with confidence and charm. Demonstrating incredible energy and superbly choreographed moves, there were no weak links among the talented ensemble cast, who came together to deliver dynamic and vibrant production that was a joy from start to finish.

Choreography was first class and despite the often busy stage, each dance number was executed with precision and flair. The orchestra, under the direction of John Rigby, worked tirelessly to bring the show’s iconic score to life.

But while the soundtrack and story of Joseph was unchanged, the musical masterpiece conveyed a modern feel, thanks to its visually stunning sets, vibrant projections and brilliant use of lighting. For fans of the musical or newcomers to the show, Joseph is a dream production that should not be missed.
