Lymington pub the Monkey Brewhouse has opened its own microbrewery
A POPULAR Lymington pub will now be selling its own freshly brewed beers with the addition of an on-site microbrewery.
The Monkey Brewhouse in Southampton Road will be serving IPAs, classic English porters and lagers brewed by Will Bradshaw, who took over the pub with wife Lizzie in July 2019.
As well as the brewery, which is housed in an oak framed addition, the main 18th century building has also undergone a refurbishment, with the extension of the dining and terrace areas.
“The brewery is part of the pub, on full view for the diners to be able to watch all the action,” said Will, a brewer by trade. “We’ll be using the best quality ingredients to produce cask and keg beer fresh from the taps.
“The freshest of hops from Herefordshire will be used to brew our bitters and porters, German hops for lager, and American, Australian and New Zealand hops for pales and IPAs. We will also be using heritage yeast strains from Britain and Munich. And, of course, New Forest water!
“The beer will be available to buy in mini-kegs direct from the brewery to take away and enjoy from home, and I’m also looking to sell it to local free houses.”
It has been a lifelong ambition of Will’s to run his own brewery, born of a love of beer and pubs. At the age of 21 he began brewing from his London flat at the weekends, going on to work at a handful of London breweries.
He took on his first full-time brewing job at Gloucester Brewery before going on to run his own microbrewery in a pub in Bristol for three years.
Will won several regional SIBA (Society Independent Brewers Association)awards for his beers and also scooped best Milk Stout in the UK at the prestigious World Beer Awards 2018.
Having grown up in the New Forest, Will wanted to return to the area to fulfil his dream of setting up his own brewery.
Customers can expect the same well-loved, seasonal food offering at the Monkey Brewhouse, including seafood, fish and meat, alongside daily specials and a pub classics menu. Firm favourites include the Indonesian seafood curry, crispy panko chicken burger with a barbecue relish, and the award-winning Sunday roast.
The Monkey Brewhouse – formerly the Monkey House – also boasts an extensive wine and spirit list.
Over the last year, Will and Lizzie have overseen a full refurbishment of the pub – one of the last standing free houses – including the bathrooms, bar area and bed and breakfast accommodation.
“We have also extended the restaurant area to include a new seating area which overlooks the brewery, with a beautiful oak frame and glass detail in keeping with the traditional style of our 18th century pub,” said Will. “We have also refurbished the terrace and garden area and added new covered outside seating with heaters for those that still wish to dine or have a drink outside – whatever the weather.
“Have no fear, you can expect the same warm welcome from managers Karen Carter and Sam Pineau, and chef Mark and his kitchen team will continue to serve all of the Monkey favourites.”
The pub is open Monday to Sunday between 11am and 11pm.
