St Barbe Museum & Art Gallery in Lymington launches 25th Open exhibition
WORK from top Hampshire and Dorset artists will be displayed alongside budding newcomers at the annual St Barbe Open exhibition in Lymington.
Now in its 25th year, the contest is firmly established as a highlight in the local arts calendar celebrating artists from the local area, Hampshire, Dorset and beyond. Work will be on display at the museum and art gallery until Saturday 26th April.
Each year hundreds of artworks are submitted to be considered by the panel of professional artists who select the exhibition and award the prizes for the best print, abstract work and the best entry from a non-professional artist.
A final shortlist of around 100 are then chosen to be displayed in St Barbe’s national-standard galleries. The showcase is open to any artist, amateur or professional to submit up to two paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics or textile works.
In addition to celebrating established artists, the St Barbe Open also offers an opportunity for the next generation of creatives. Running alongside the main exhibition, the Young Artists Open invites youngsters up to the age of 16 to show their work, inspiring young people to engage with art.
Long-time St Barbe supporter Gordon Young continues to champion young talent by offering four Ted Marsh Awards, providing cash prizes and art materials in memory of the museum’s founding chair.
St Barbe spokesperson Penny Curry said: “Visitors to the open exhibition will be treated to an inspiring mix of paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, ceramics and textiles, reflecting the extraordinary creativity of the regions artistic community.
“The exhibition also offers the chance to take home a piece of original art, with a range of high-quality, affordable works available for purchase.”
Visitors can vote for their favourites as part of the People’s Choice Award.
